Materials needed for crochet

Often, when we want to start crocheting, we stop ourselves, thinking we need a lot of supplies to begin. But do we really? In this lesson, we’ll explain everything clearly.

The very first thing you need is yarn. For your first project, it’s best to choose yarn of medium thickness and in light colors. This will help you clearly see the stitches and learn how to recognize them.

The second essential item is a crochet hook. Choose one of medium size — around 3–5 mm. With this hook, it’s hard to make mistakes, and your projects will work up quickly.

Scissors are also an important part of your toolkit. You’ll need them to finish your crochet work or to join different yarn colors.

Stitch markers are not a must, but they’re very convenient if you want to mark the beginning of a round, make a joining point, or simply keep track of your daily progress.

A yarn needle is necessary for joining pieces together, though you can often do this with your crochet hook as well.

So, here are the 5 basic tools every beginner needs to start crocheting: yarn, a hook, scissors, stitch markers, and a yarn needle. Get these ready for our upcoming lessons!
